Fifty new COVID-19 cases were reported Friday morning, by the Thai Ministry of Public Health, including a six-month old baby, the country’s youngest victim to date. This brings the total known infections in Thailand to 322 so far.
Disease Control Department director-general Dr. Suwanchai Wattanayingcharoenchai told the media in its daily briefing that 41 of the new infections, including the baby, are related to the Lumpini boxing stadium, entertainment venues in Bangkok and returnees from a religious ceremony in Malaysia.
The remaining nine cases include a Thai student and an official returning from Britain, two foreign visitors, one guide, one security guard and three others.
Of the 322 infected to date, 76 were related to the boxing stadium and 62 with entertainment establishments. 43 have recovered, leaving 278 still in hospital and one fatality.
Deputy Public Health Minister Sathit Pitutacha said today there are now 1,600 beds in hospitals across the country to accommodate patients infected with coronavirus, plus another 450-500 beds in hotels, which have been converted into temporary hospitals for less serious cases.
In Bangkok, the city administration has reserved 39 beds, at Bang Khun Thian Hospital for the Elderly, to accommodate less serious virus cases.
It is reported that the first consignment of 40,000 Favipiravir pills from China has arrived and been distributed to hospitals for use in the treatment of COVID-19 infections.
