Nakhon Ratchasima, in Thailand’s north-east, has become the world’s fourth place to gain UNESCO’s coveted “Triple Crown”, after the international organisation declared the Khorat Geopark a Global Geopark on Wednesday.
The Khorat Geopark covers five districts in the province, including Mueang, Sikhio, Sung Noen, Kham Thale So and Chaloem Phra Kiat.
Previously, UNESCO had declared Khao Yai National Park to be a World Natural Heritage site and the Sakaerat Biosphere Reserve, in Pak Thong Chai district, to be a Biosphere Reserve.
Suwat Liptapallop, chairman of the Chart Pattana Kla party, said that UNESCO’s recognition of Sakaerat Biosphere Reserve is welcome news for the people of Nakhon Ratchasima.
This designation will help boost tourism and the economy in the province, he added.
