Technology Crime Suppression police arrested the chairman of Lamphun Warriors FC yesterday (Tuesday) for allegedly operating an illegal online gambling platform and money laundering.

Armed with an arrest warrant issued by the Criminal Court, the police went to a house in Ban Pin sub-district in Dok Khamtai district of Phayao, belonging to the father-in-law of Pongsiri Tarachawongsuk, chairman of Lamphun Warriors FC.

Pol Maj-Gen Tinnakorn Rungmart, deputy commissioner of the Police Forensic Science division, told the media that police had been investigating the activities of Pongsiri for several years, until they had collected enough evidence to seek the warrant for his arrest.

He also said that the suspect appeared to be aware that he was being followed by the police and kept moving from one place to another to avoid detection, until police discovered that he was living with his father-in-law in Phayao province.

The suspect is alleged to have amassed a large fortune from the illegal business and some of the proceeds were used to buy the football club, allegedly as a way to launder money.

Pol Maj-Gen Tinnakorn said he will consult with the Anti-Money Laundering Office about the possibility of impounding Pongsiri’s assets.
