The tussle between Pheu Thai and Move Forward parties over the House speakership is expected to be resolved amicably, before the House meets on July 4th to vote for the speaker and two deputies, said Pheu Thai party leader Chonlanan Srikaew today (Tuesday).

He stressed that the two parties will remain together in the coalition “because we are bound by the mandate of the people to be the democratically elected government.”

He also dismissed speculation that the Pheu Thai party may break away from the coalition.

Explaining the procedure for voting for the speakership, Chonlanan said that the candidate nominated for the post must be present at the House meeting and is required to give a vision speech, failing that he will not receive the votes from the MPs or may be disqualified.

The negotiating teams from the Pheu Thai and Move Forward parties are scheduled to meet on Wednesday to consider the speakership issue, said the Pheu Thai party leader.

If the matter is settled by the negotiation teams, the decision will be referred to meetings of the two parties for consideration, said Chonlanan adding, however, that the Pheu Thai party may not have to adopt a resolution to confirm the decision if its MPs are already satisfied.

The eight coalition parties are Move Forward, Pheu Thai, Prachachart, Thai Sang Thai, Seree Ruam Thai (Thai Liberal), Fair, Pheu Thai Ruam Palang and Plung Sungkom Mai. Together they command 313 out of the 500 seats in the House.
