The tantalizing aroma of holy basil is set to infuse the air as the Tourism Authority of Thailand hosts the grand finale of the 2023 World Kaphrao Thailand Grand Prix on August 25-27.

In the heart of Bangkok, along the Khlong Phadung Krung Kasem adjacent to Hua Lamphong railway station, a culinary spectacle awaits. This extravaganza promises a lively street food ambience bursting with fiery chilli and spices, as culinary enthusiasts gather to relish an array of Pad Kaphrao dishes and deepen their appreciation for holy basil.

Pad Kaphrao, renowned as Stir-fried Holy Basil, stands as a Thai culinary cornerstone, found across the dining scene from roadside carts to upscale restaurants. The beloved Pad Kaphrao Kai (Stir-fried Holy Basil with Chicken) is a common rendition, while more lavish options feature lobster or succulent wagyu tenderloin.

With each Pad Kaphrao incarnation boasting its distinct character, a visit to the World Kaphrao Grand Prix becomes a journey of uncovering Thailand’s diverse street food treasures.

Put together on the theme “The Greatest Kaphrao on Earth,” this culinary event aspires to propel Pad Kaphrao onto the global gastronomic stage, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Pad Thai, Tom Yam soup, and Massaman curry.

The event’s centrepiece is the “Pad Kaphrao Thailand Championship”. Here, contestants vie for the Thai national championship in both the “Authentic & Beyond” category, showcasing traditional Thai stir-fry, and the innovative international category, where modern interpretations of Pad Kaphrao take the spotlight. Contestants must incorporate at least 50% locally sourced ingredients, crafting dishes that mirror the Thai identity garnished with creative flair.

Culminating in a final showdown, this competition commences with regional rounds featuring contestants from Thailand’s major regions and Bangkok. Guided by renowned chefs, participants will craft their unique Pad Kaphrao interpretations. The winners stand to claim prizes totalling over THB 1 million.

“Pad Kaphrao is an iconic Thai fast-food delight, bursting with both flavour and nutritional goodness. This classic Thai dish boasts adaptability to respond to a wide range of preferences, with the heart of its distinctive taste and aroma lying in the inclusion of holy basil within the stir-fry. For centuries, holy basil has entrenched itself in Thai tradition, gracing kitchens and local remedies alike. Its digestive benefits are noteworthy, adding another layer of significance to this country’s favourite food.

Throughout this gastronomic event, visitors will have the opportunity to witness the weaving of Thai tradition and culinary culture on every single plate,” says Yuthasak Supasorn, the Governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT).

Pad Kaphrao is a dish familiar to many, often mistaken as a default choice at Thai restaurants. The dish’s ubiquitous and straightforward preparation can lead to playful banter from Thai diners when it’s ordered. This humour stems from its easy accessibility, giving rise to the misconception of simplicity. Yet, for those distanced from Thailand, a simple bowl of Pad Kaphrao, crowned with a sunny-side-up egg, can trigger waves of nostalgic tears.

Beyond its local popularity, Pad Kaphrao’s renown extends internationally. In Japan, for instance, local tastes prompt adaptations to Pad Kaphrao’s composition. With countless recipes available online, many attempt to recreate the dish at home to relive memories and flavours of Thailand, occasionally producing amusing outcomes. A common mistake involves confusing holy basil with sweet basil or lemon basil.

Among the basil family’s diverse members, only holy basil unlocks the essence of Pad Kaphrao. The options narrow down to white or red holy basil, with the former being more prevalent in markets. The latter, rarer yet boasting a robust peppery profile, offers an alternative twist.

At the 2023 World Kaphrao Thailand Grand Prix, Thai food and herb enthusiasts will delve into the intricate world of Pad Kaphrao and the essence of holy basil itself.

Beyond the epicurean experiences, the event also features activities designed to promote gastronomic tourism.

Twelve renowned restaurants will present their finest Pad Kaphrao renditions, alongside legendary street food vendors and food trucks. There’ll also be an organic food market, herbal kitchen gardens, and an array of cultural and entertainment showcases. This culinary extravaganza promises to paint the town with hues and flavours, creating an unforgettable experience for food enthusiasts and travellers alike.
