The Thai government and US-based Google have announced a policy of strategic cooperation, to lay the foundations for digital infrastructure, research and development of artificial intelligence, cloud-first policies and the setup of a Google cloud region in Bangkok.

Ruth Porat, chief financial officer of Alphabet, and its subsidiary Google, said that this cooperation is aimed at increasing the digital competitiveness of Thailand and ushering in a cloud-based digital transformation, under the concept of “Leave no Thai behind”.

The first foundation is the establishment of a cloud region in Bangkok, to drive digital services which are more reliable and faster. This will help to generate about US$4.1 billion for the Thai economy and create about 50,000 new jobs by the end of 2030.

The second foundation is research into and development of generative AI, utilizing Google Cloud technology. The third is to set cloud-first policies and the fourth is to enable access for all Thais to skills in digital technology and the cloud system.

To help Thai people develop technological skills, last year Google launched the “Samart Skills” project and provided scholarships to Thai students to undergo training in digital technology.

An introduction course on generative AI was also offered by Google Thailand to members of the public who wish to familiarise themselves with AI and generative AI.
