Thaksin Shinawatra cannot contest an election or become prime minister again, because it is prohibited by the Constitution. He could, however, help the government as an advisor, once he completes his time on parole in August, Wissanu Krea-ngam, an advisor to the premier today.

He also noted that it would not be unusual for the government to invite Thaksin to help in a private capacity.

Regarding the lèse majesté charge against Thaksin, still pending in the courts, Wissanu said the case would not pose an obstacle, noting that numerous political leaders are facing charges in court.

The government’s top legal expert went on to say that Thaksin may help the Pheu Thai Party, because party affairs are the internal matters of a private entity.

This is, however, on the condition that he is a party member, otherwise he could be seen as an outsider trying to dominate or influence a political party.
