Three members of a security force were injured, one of them seriously, during a gun battle between government security forces and a group of insurgents holed up in a village in Khok Pho district of Pattani province today.

According to an initial report, troops and para-military rangers were dispatched to a village in Na Kate sub-district, after the security force was informed that an unknown number of insurgents were taking refuge in a house there.

The security forces laid siege to the house from a safe distance and used a loud hailer to ask the insurgents to surrender. Those inside the house then threw a hand grenade at the officers and opened fire, triggering a firefight.

One of the injured officers sustained serious shrapnel wounds to both of his legs and was flown by helicopter to a hospital in Hat Yai for emergency surgery.
