The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has ordered the suspension of work on the construction of a flyover at Bangkok’s Bangkapi intersection, after a fatal accident late last night (Wednesday) in which one worker was killed and two others were injured.

It was reported that a huge metallic sheet fell from the flyover as workers tried to lift it, with the help of two cranes, to reinforce the underside of the flyover.

BMA spokesman Aekvarunyoo Amrapala today blamed the contractor for not following the correct construction procedure, adding that they have been ordered to increase safety measures at the construction site, to ensure that such an accident will not be repeated.

Sompote Kwangkaew, deputy director-general of the Labour Protection and Welfare Department, said representatives of the contractor will be invited for questioning, in an effort to assess whether the construction work was in line with safety requirements.

He also said the family of Anan Longsri, who died, will be entitled to 50,000 baht for funeral costs and compensation amounting to 120 months of his salary, totalling about 1.5 million baht, plus his pension of another 46,000 baht.

The two injured workers have already been discharged from hospital.
