Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwan says he is confident that Government coalition parties will stick together to complete its four-year term, even though their MPs are split, resulting in the suspension of two related House meetings due to a lack of a quorum.
He made this statement in reference to the suspension of two House meetings on Wednesday night and Thursday morning for a vote recount on the opposition motion to set up an ad hoc committee to study and investigate the impacts of pre-election orders and executive orders issued under Section 44 of the interim constitution.
Regardless of its slim majority in parliament, the deputy prime minister maintained that the Government is stable and the two related incidents in the House will not affect the Government’s image or stability.
He assured that such incidents will not be repeated.
The opposition’s motion was supported by 236 MPs, with 231 voting against. The Government demanded a recount, but the required minimum of 250 MPs were not present.
Several opposition MPs were in the parliament building on Thursday, but stayed away from the meeting for the vote recount. Others attended the meeting, but did not insert their ID cards into the system to declare their presence.
The deputy prime minister said he was unaware of a report that Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha had insisted that this opposition motion must be defeated.
