The Centre for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) has expressed concern over the increasing number of new infections in the southern provinces of Yala, Pattani, Narathiwat and Songkhla, while infections in Bangkok and its neighbouring provinces are steadily declining.
CCSA Assistant Spokesperson Dr. Apisamai Srirangsan said today that 1,917 new infections had been recorded in the four southern border provinces in the past 24 hours, accounting for 17% all new cases nationwide, up from 15%, adding that severe cases and fatalities are also on the rise.
Of the 10 provinces with the highest infection rates, Bangkok still ranks in the top spot, logging 1,423 cases today, followed by 861 cases in Samut Prakan, 820 cases in Chon Buri, 545 cases in Yala, 515 cases in Narathiwat, 472 cases in Rayong, 451 cases in Songkhla, 406 cases in Pattani, 378 cases in Nakhon Si Thammarat and 353 in Prachin Buri.
For the rest of the country, Dr. Apisamai said new clusters have been linked to a youth soccer training centre in Lop Buri, a construction worker facility in Prachin Buri, funeral ceremonies in Ubon Ratchathani and Si Sa Ket, a vocational training centre for the disabled in Chiang Mai, a factory in Trat and fishermen in Rayong.
Daily new infection rates appear to be stable for now, but she warned that the figures may spike from today, now that lockdown restrictions have been eased.
Dr. Apisamai appealed for cooperation from members of the public by not lowering their guard for the next 15 days, so that the restrictions can be further eased if infections do not spike and continue to decrease.
11,754 new COVID-19 cases were logged today, including 501 among prisoners and 11 foreign arrivals in quarantine. 12,473 patients have recovered today with 115,233 are still under treatment, of whom 3,144 are severe cases, including 709 on ventilators. The death toll today was 123.
