Police in Si Maha Phot district of Prachin Buri province are looking for an informal money lender who allegedly shamed defaulting debtors by posting half naked images of them on social media.

Police and the district chief officer searched the house of the lender, known to her debtors as “Sor Tan”, in Tha Toom sub-district yesterday, but they could not find her.

Police say that they have received complaints from some informal debtors that images of them in a state of undress had been posted on Facebook, allegedly by Sor Tan, after they defaulted on their repayments.

They told the Pen Noeng Foundation that Sor Tan usually lends between 500 and 1,000 baht and charges interest at 20% per week.

They also allege that each of them would be required to submit a picture of themselves half naked, from waist down for men and from the waist up for women, together with their ID card numbers, as a condition for lending them the money.

One debtor, a 29-year old man living in Chachoengsao province, said that the image of him half naked was posted on social media after he missed only one repayment.
