Thailand’s “khao niao mamuang”, or mango sticky rice, has been rated the second-best of 26 dishes containing mango by TasteAtlas, an online platform and database of food and beverages from around the world.

Categorised as a rice pudding, this traditional Thai dessert is a favourite way to finish a meal, reported TasteAtlas, adding that “The dish is prepared with glutinous rice, which is first steamed, then doused in sweetened coconut milk. Lastly, the rice is served with slices of fresh mango.” This simple dessert is very famous and can be found in any eatery in Thailand.

Topping the list of dishes containing mango was “aamras”, a dessert from Maharashtra, India. In third place were ice cream sorbets from the Philippines, followed by “rujak”, a fruit salad from Java, Indonesia, and mango chutney, a relish from India.

Other Thai dishes containing mango on the list included the snack “mamuang nam pla wan”, or green mango with sweet fish sauce, in tenth place, “som tam mamuang”, or green mango salad, landed at eleven, “nam pla wan” dip, or mango with sweetened fish sauce, was sixteenth and Thai pickled mango or “mamuang dong” was placed twenty third.

In April, TasteAtlas drew criticism from Thais when it rated “kaeng tai pla”, a traditional southern Thai curry, as the worst dish in the world.

It described the dish as a thick and aromatic fish curry, prepared with fermented fish entrails and a spicy curry paste, consisting of chili peppers, galangal, shrimp paste, turmeric, shallots and lemongrass.
