A Move Forward MP called on Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa today to declare his vision and stance concerning the country’s foreign policy.

Chulapong Yukate, a House committee on Foreign Affairs deputy chairperson, said the public wants to know in which direction the foreign minister will steer the country.

Maris, 63, a veteran diplomat, replaced Parnpree Bahiddha-Nukara, a long-time member of the ruling Pheu Thai party, in late April.

His appointment was harshly criticised, because he is seen as a close of embattled former PM Thaksin Shinawatra.

Chulapong specifically called on Maris to make clear his vision for Thailand’s roles on the international and ASEAN stages, asking “What are the standpoints of Thailand concerning the relationship between superpowers, like the United States and China? \

Thailand has been affected by the civil war inside Myanmar, which has escalated recently, leading to an influx of displaced persons,” and “How will Thailand seek help and support from ASEAN countries, China and the US concerning Myanmar issues.”
