The Navy will hold a meeting to consider seeking His Majesty the King’s approval of a special rank for Warrant Officer Saman Kunan, a retired SEAL member, who died performing an operation to rescue the 12 footballers and their coach stranded in Tham Luang cave, Navy spokesman Rear Admiral Chettha Jaipiam said on Friday (July 6).
Saman became unconscious while on the way back through a passageway underwater to the third chamber, where the Navy SEAL has set up a forward headquarters, after delivering air tanks to T-junction in Tham Luang cave. He was pronounced dead at 1 am on Friday at the third chamber after an unsuccessful CPR.
He was a retired seal member, who before his death, worked in a security unit at the Suvarnabhumi airport under the Airports of Thailand Plc.
Since Saman is no longer a member of the Naval Force, he is not entitled to any benefits as active naval personnel. However, the Navy is looking to see if there are any other rights and benefits which can be bestowed on Saman for his sacrifice, said the Navy spokesman.
