The pro-junta Palang Pracharat party has decided to abandon its plan to have its prime ministerial candidate, Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, attend its campaign rally this Sunday in Thailand’s northeastern province of Nakhon Ratchasima or other rallies in the future.

Party secretary-general Sontirat Sontijirawong, speaking at a rally in Bangkok’s Lumpini, said the party decided to adjust its campaign plans after General Prayut informed them of his reluctance to attend campaign rallies due to legal complications.

Sontirat, however, insisted that Sunday’s campaign rally will proceed as planned, just without the Prime Minister. He also hinted that there might be some “surprises” from the party, adding that the party was in the process of working out a campaign format which will avoid any legal risks for the Prime Minister and enable him to meet the voters.

An informed party source said that party core members met on Monday and concluded that his appearances would not be worth the risk.
