People living in Thailand’s north-eastern province of Chaiyaphum have been advised to exercise caution over the food that they and their children consume, to make sure that it is properly cooked and contains no raw or half-cooked ingredients, due to the recent spread of Norovirus.

More than 300 students at four schools in the Mueang district have been taken to hospitals since Tuesday, several of them have been admitted for treatment after falling ill with stomach aches, diarrhoea, vomiting and nausea.

Lab tests of fluid specimens have confirmed the presence of Norovirus, said Dr. Wachira Botphibul, the provincial health chief, adding that the virus is commonly found in ice.

He said that he has instructed all heath officials to advise people to take additional care over the food that they eat.

Governor Sophon Suwannarat visited the sick students last night (Wednesday) at the provincial hospital to offer moral support.

He said that a number of other students are being treated at private hospitals, some of whom are on saline drips.
