A senior Pheu Thai MP has voiced support for a bill, proposed by the Move Forward party, calling for the dissolution of Thailand’s Internal Security Operations Command (ISOC).
Adisorn Piengkes, government whip chief, posted on his X account, @adisornpk, today (Monday) that ISOC is a state within state and, because of it, the army can intervene and has a superior role over other government officials.
“ISOC should be dissolved,” he wrote.
Because of ISOC, the army holds power over everyone. Disbanding ISOC will be effectively handing rights, freedoms and equality back to the people. It will also be a rebuilding of democracy, Adisorn wrote.
Move Forward party MP Romadon Panjor has also called for the dissolution of ISOC.
The hashtag “#Save ISOC” has, however, appeared on numerous political web pages in response to the bill proposed by Romadon.
Romadon had said that the Internal Security Act B.E. 2551 (2008), which created ISOC, has given too much power to the military and makes ISOC a duplication of the other security agencies, wasting money and manpower.
The people behind the hashtag claim that ISOC is instrumental in protecting people in three restive southern provinces. If the proposed bill passes and becomes law, southern insurgents will increase their violent activities and further destabilise the already restive region.
It urges its supporters to vote against the bill, to protect Thailand from “ill-intentioned” people.
