Bangkok police are making preparations to cope with a student-led protest, scheduled to take place at Thammasat University’s Tha Prachan campus on Saturday September 19th, to ensure peace and order.

Pol Lt-Gen Pakkapong Pongpetra, Commissioner of Metropolitan Police, said today that it is not yet confirmed, by the protest organizers, how many days the protest will last or whether the protesters will move out of the campus to other areas, such as Sanam Luang or the Democracy Monument.

He said, however, that the police have developed a contingency plan to cope with any changes to the original plan to stage the rally on campus.

One of the protest leaders, Mr. Parit “Penquin” [sic] Chivarak, said in his Facebook post that he will lead protesters from the campus to Sanam Luang.

Pol Lt-Gen Pakkapong, however, warned student leaders that their protest must remain within the law.

Earlier, Thammasat University’s Rector, Associate Professor Kesinee Vitoonchart, issued an announcement setting the guidelines for the protest on Saturday.

Such guidelines include expressions by students remaining within the scope of the law and that the issues to be raised during the protest should be agreed, in writing, by the students, the protest organizers, the police and the university’s administrators.
