Former prime minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha has been appointed a member of the Privy Council, according to the Royal Gazette.

It said His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn has appointed Gen Prayut a privy councillor effective as of Thursday.

Gen Prayut, a former army commander-in-chief, came to power in a military coup in 2014 and served as prime minister until 2019 when he was re-elected to the top executive post following a general election.

Gen Prayut left office in August this year.

The Privy Council, which serves as a body of advisors to the monarchy, was created during the reign of King Rama V (1853-1910). The privy councillors are also tasked with coordinating between the Crown and the government, Parliament, Courts of Justice, private organizations and citizens regarding matters stated in relevant laws.
