Thailand is pleased to have served as the venue for a meeting between China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi and US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan who will meet to discuss about US-China ties and Taiwan issues, said Thai Foreign Ministry spokesperson Kanchana Patarachok today.
The meeting was arranged bilaterally, with Thailand playing no role in the organization, she said. “On the Thai side, we take note and acknowledge the meeting between these two key players,” she stated. “Bangkok is happy. Thailand, being a friendly country, maintains positive relations with everyone.”
Patarachok expressed Thailand’s pleasure in the resumption of the meeting, following the previous one in November of last year between the US and China. She emphasized Thailand’s confidence that the dialogue between the two nations will contribute to peace and security in the region and on the global stage.
The scheduled meeting in Bangkok, taking place today and tomorrow, comes approximately two months after the four-hour meeting between U.S. President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in San Francisco.
A Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson informed Reuters that U.S.-China ties and the Taiwan issue will be topics raised during the meeting between Sullivan and Wang. This builds on the leaders’ pledge from the world’s two largest economies to deepen their dialogue.
“During the new round of meetings, (Wang) will present China’s position on China-U.S. relations, including the Taiwan issue, and exchange views with the U.S. side on international and regional issues of common interest.”
