The Thai Embassy in London has issued a statement advising Thais living in or travelling to the UK to avoid crowded places and protests, as thousands of anti-immigration protesters have rallied in towns and cities across the nation.

Thais are advised to be particularly cautious when traveling to Liverpool, Bristol, Manchester, Blackpool and Belfast.

Reports indicate that the protests may spread to more cities.

The Thai Embassy suggests that Thais stay updated with news and information from British authorities. In case of emergency, they can contact the embassy on +44 (0) 7918 651 720 or via email at consular.lon@mfa.go.th.

The BBC reports that the rioting was triggered by misinformation circulated online, claiming that the 17-year-old suspect in the fatal stabbing of three young girls in Southport on July 29th was a Muslim asylum seeker.

Mosques and hotels housing asylum seekers were among the places targeted during the unrest, with some shops being burned and looted.

On Wednesday, shop owners on high streets across England boarded up windows and closed early in anticipation of further violence.
