Two locally-acquired COVID-19 cases have been recorded today in Bangkok and in the central province of Ayutthaya.
According to the Disease Control Department, the case in Bangkok is a 78-year old seafood vendor, at a fresh market in the Prachachuen area of Bang Sue district, who reportedly went to Samut Sakhon province earlier this month to buy seafood for sale at the market.
According to the timeline, between December 1st and 11th, the woman and her son travelled by car from Bangkok to Samut Sakhon at about 5am to buy sea food for sale. They arrived back at about 10am and the woman went to the market to sell seafood all day.
On December 12th, she developed symptoms and went to a pharmacy to buy medicine. Three days later, she had headache and began losing her sense of taste. Her condition worsened and she went to Kasemrat Hospital on December 18th for a test,which returned a positive result. She is now being treated at Mongkut Wattana Hospital.
The case in Ayutthaya province is a 29-year old woman, who used to work at a beauty salon in Chiang Mai province. An asymptomatic case, she has tested positive for the virus.
In Samut Sakhon province, police sealed off the central shrimp market with barbed wire on Saturday night as part of the lockdown, in force until January 3rd to contain the spread of the contagion.
Although trading at the Mahachai fresh market opened as normal today, many vendors have complained that there are fewer customers and they have had to cut the prices of their seafood by as much as 30% percent to attract customers.
The Taekwondo Association of Thailand, meanwhile, advised competitors and instructors from Samut Sakhon to pull out ofthe Taekwondo Championship, due to take place betweenDecember 21st and 24th in the northeastern province of Nakhon Ratchasima.
The lockdown in Samut Sakhon went into effect last night, with many vendors complaining that sales have dropped substantially because they have to close before 10pm.
More than 500 new COVID-19 cases, most of them among migrant workers from Myanmar, were recorded yesterday, the highest surge in a single day in Samut Sakhon province. As of yesterday, 548 cases have been reported in the province.
