The United States’ criticism of the Constitutional Court’s order for the dissolution of the Move Forward party is “meaningless”, as Thailand is a sovereign country, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin said today.

“We, as a sovereign nation, have our own way of developing our politics and democracy. So, what the US says about us is meaningless,” he stated, adding “I am confident that all Thais understand this. We would not allow any country to interfere with our internal matters or our sovereignty.”

He did say, however, that “interference” might not be the right word. “I think it (the US) may just be offering advice,” he said.

The US Department of State has issued a statement criticising yesterday’s court decision, claiming that it jeopardises Thailand’s democratic progress and runs counter to the aspirations of the Thai people for a strong democratic future.

The US urged Thailand to take action to ensure fully inclusive political participation and to protect democracy and the freedoms of association and expression.

Srettha also commented on reports that some groups might try to incite unrest, to vent their anger over the dissolution.

“I have already talked to Deputy National Police Commissioner Pol Gen Kittiratt Phanphet about these reports. He told me that there were some symbolic gatherings, which were peaceful,” Srettha said.
